i need your wisdom here, folks. is it the job of the nascent indie-rockist critical reviewer to:
a. blow smoke up the ass of his/her reviewees
b. be absolutely fucking merciless and write his/her reviews with a scalpel?
having been in my own time the recipient of both the scathing and the hagiographical, i must confess i always preferred the scathing. it made me feel that i had inspired someone to truly express themselves, and what else do we do creative work for?
but, perhaps i am now blowing smoke up my own ass.
oh well, carry on…..

I was listening to KEXP today and the focus was on Echo and the Bunnymen. The dj was irked because Ian McCulloch was mean to her during an interview. I was glad she vented about it instead of saying how cool he was. She also busted him saying that in the past he said he didn’t even know who Jim Morrison was and it was absurd being compared to him and a few years later he was saying Morrison was a major influence.
